What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a skin injectable that is perfect for people who want a natural way to smooth out wrinkles that is gentle, minimally invasive, and can fit into their busy schedule. Restylane is a highly versatile filler that can help with:
- Lip lines
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead creases
- Volume loss under the eyes
- Marionette lines
- Smile lines
- Lip Enhancement
- And more
How Does Restylane Work?
Restylane is a Hyaluronic Acid-based gel, which means that it’s made of a naturally occurring element in your skin and works by complementing your skin’s already-established process of skin care. When the product is injected into your skin, it fills the space lost by reduced fat pads and lost collagen, and gives it volume again.
A Closer Look at What Restylane Treats
- Wrinkles and Folds: Restylane can soften the lines that form around the nose and mouth, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines. The gel adds support beneath the surface so the skin looks smoother, and facial expressions still appear natural without harsh creases dominating your features.
- Lips: Restylane is often chosen for lip enhancement because it can add volume and improve definition along the border of the lips. If you want a fuller appearance or have noticed thinning with age, you may find that the treatment restores balance to the face while still allowing the lips to move naturally.
- Under-Eye Hollows and Tear Troughs: The delicate skin under the eyes can begin to look sunken, which creates shadows that make you appear tired. Restylane restores a smoother contour and reduces the hollow look that makeup alone cannot correct.
- Chin and Jawline: A well-defined chin and jawline shape the lower face and contribute to overall balance. Restylane can enhance projection or add subtle volume in these areas and create a more structured appearance without surgical intervention.
The Restylane Family of Products
Restylane-L
Restylane-L is often used to soften lines around the nose and mouth, but it is also an option for improving the look of tear troughs under the eyes. The gel contains lidocaine, which helps make the treatment more comfortable during injection. It restores volume that has diminished with age, and its smooth texture allows for natural-looking results in areas where the skin is thinner.
Restylane Silk
Restylane Silk was the first FDA-approved filler designed specifically for subtle lip enhancement and smoothing fine lines around the mouth. The formula is made with smaller and smoother particles compared to other Restylane products, so it is ideal for precise adjustments. Those who want soft, natural lip definition often choose this Restylane lip filler because it creates noticeable results without looking overdone.
Restylane Lyft
Restylane Lyft is formulated for areas that need more structure and support, such as facial folds. The gel is slightly thicker, which helps it add noticeable volume while still blending well with the surrounding tissue.
Restylane Refyne
Restylane Refyne is often recommended for moderate lines and folds, particularly those that move with facial expressions. The product keeps the skin flexible while still smoothing wrinkles, so your natural movements remain fluid. We may also use it to treat under-eye hollows because it integrates well with delicate tissue.
Restylane Defyne
Restylane Defyne is formulated for deeper folds that require more correction, such as pronounced smile lines. It supports dynamic movement and provides strength and flexibility at the same time, which is important for areas of the face that are in constant motion.
Restylane Kysse
Restylane Kysse is another lip enhancement product and is known for creating soft, natural movement. The technology behind it allows the filler to stretch and move with your lips as you talk, smile, and eat. Patients who want both volume and a hydrated look often find Kysse gives them that balance without altering the natural feel of their lips.
Restylane Contour
Restylane Contour is a favorite for fine line correction on the lower face. It has a formulation that integrates smoothly into the skin, so the treated area maintains natural flexibility. We may use it for those with small, etched lines around the mouth or chin who want subtle refinement.
Restylane Eyelight
Restylane Eyelight treats hollows under the eyes, an area that can make you look tired even when you feel rested. The gel has a density suited for delicate tissue and gives support without puffiness. Filling the shadowed areas helps brighten the under-eye region so the face appears more awake and refreshed.
Restylane vs. Other Wrinkle Treatments
Other Dermal Fillers
Restylane and Juvederm are both hyaluronic acid-based fillers, but the formulas have slightly different structures that can affect how they behave in the skin. Juvederm products have a smoother consistency, while Restylane provides more structure, which can be helpful in areas where definition is important. Some patients prefer one over the other based on how the filler feels or how long the results tend to last for them. We offer both options so your treatment can be tailored to the specific area of concern and the kind of look you want.
Neuromodulators
Botox®, Dysport®, and Letybo® are neuromodulators that relax the tiny muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines and crow’s feet. Restylane physically adds volume to smooth wrinkles that are visible even when the face is at rest. Neuromodulators and fillers complement each other well because they target different aspects of facial aging.
Preparing for Your Restylane Treatment
All my patients are advised to take Arnicare Tablets starting 2 days before treatment to minimize or prevent bruising. Before your treatment begins, it’s best to avoid taking any medications that may thin the blood. This includes blood pressure medication, aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E supplements and more. During your consultation, be sure and tell a member of our medical team about any medications you are currently taking. We also recommend limiting alcohol for a couple of days before your injections, since alcohol can increase your chances of bruising. Staying hydrated and eating a light meal ahead of time can also help you feel more relaxed during the visit.
What Are Restylane Treatments Like?
Comfort is always a priority during our filler treatments, which is why we always begin with a topical anesthetic numbing cream. Every filler product we use also contains lidocaine, so the injections feel easy and patients do not experience pain. For lip fillers, we perform a mini-dental block that keeps the area completely numb, so the process is stress-free. We use a blunt cannula for Restylane fillers, since it allows for smooth placement and reduces the risk of bruising, and we only switch to a fine needle in areas such as the temples or cheeks. Our Treatment sessions usually last around 30 to 45 minutes, which makes it convenient to fit into a busy schedule without disrupting the rest of the day.
After Your Treatment
I recommend continuing Arnicare for 2 days after your appointment or until any bruising has fully resolved. Applying ice to the treatment area for the first day or two can also reduce swelling and keep the skin feeling comfortable. Makeup and lotions should be avoided on the treated area for the rest of the day and night to prevent irritation.
Some mild redness or swelling is normal, and these effects usually settle quickly as the filler integrates with your skin. Giving your skin time to rest and heal is the best way to help your results develop smoothly and without complications. Following these simple steps can make the recovery process easy while allowing you to return to your normal activities right away.
Who Can Use Restylane?
Restylane® can be used on any skin type and color and can be easily integrated with your current skincare regimen.
It’s best for medium-depth wrinkles around the face, eyes, and chin. Results are typically more subtle than some other dermal fillers and are better for those who are looking to plump areas that may have lost some fat or are looking a little flat. Those who have more sun-damaged skin can also benefit from this treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does Restylane Last?
The longevity of results depends on which product is used and where it is placed. The Restylane website provides estimates for how long you can expect each type to last:
- Restylane-L often lasts as long as 18 months in nasolabial folds, about 12 months when used on the backs of the hands, and close to 6 months under the eyes.
- Restylane Silk generally holds results for around 6 months in the lips and the fine lines that surround the mouth.
- Restylane Lyft can maintain correction for roughly 12 months in the face.
- Restylane Refyne provides smoothing of moderate to severe folds that usually lasts up to 12 months.
- Restylane Defyne offers results that continue for about 12 months.
- Restylane Kysse enhances the lips with results that are usually visible for up to a year.
- Restylane Contour gives effects that remain noticeable for about 1 year.
When Will I See Results?
Restylane results are visible right away because the gel instantly adds volume where it is placed. Some mild swelling can make the treated area look fuller for a day or two, but as it settles, the outcome looks more refined. You will likely see your final result within about a week when swelling has resolved and the filler has fully integrated with the skin.
Can Restylane Be Dissolved If I Don’t Like the Outcome?
One of the benefits of choosing a hyaluronic acid-based product is that it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. The process is straightforward and allows us to adjust or reverse results if needed. Knowing that a Restylane filler can be dissolved offers peace of mind to patients who are new to injectable treatments.
How Much Filler Will I Need?
The amount of filler depends on your goals, the specific area being treated, and the degree of volume loss present. Some areas require only a small amount, such as subtle lip enhancement, while others, like the jawline, may need more product for visible improvement. During your consultation, we will create a plan that explains how much filler is recommended to give you the most natural and balanced outcome.
Is There Downtime After Restylane Treatments?
There is very little downtime, but mild swelling, redness, or bruising can appear at the injection sites. Swelling is most noticeable within the first 48 hours and gradually improves as the filler settles. Most people feel comfortable returning to normal activities right after their appointment, although avoiding strenuous exercise for the first day can help reduce swelling.
How Do I Maintain My Results?
Good skin care habits can make your results last longer and look better. Hydration, sun protection, and avoiding smoking all contribute to healthy skin that supports your filler treatment. Scheduling maintenance visits when the effects begin to fade helps you maintain the benefits of your Restylane treatment for as long as possible.
